Tattoos, piercings and such things were once thought of as taboo, kinky and trashy. Even today, when people are questioned, many agree that body piercings and tattoos are pretty gunky. The reasoning behind their decision is that, it’s not a part of their culture.
If you haven’t already noticed, I am -very- cultural. Despite being born and raised in a Canadian society, I hold strong morals and virtues that I abide by. Although I am pretty cultural, I seem to have absolutely no problem with tattoos and piercing, contrary to what people may think.
I do agree that they may not be the safest things to do to your body, but the whole stereotype of punks and gangsters with their tattoos and piercings is just so -overrated-. Perhaps twenty years from today, it was a sign of ‘immorality’ but I don’t believe such is the case today.
Being born and raised in Canada, I think they are perfectly alright. Now before moving on, I am speaking on behalf of -all- piercings, even the ones in those awkward places. Just because you may not like them, its wrong to classify people who have them to a certain genre. People have souls, they are not books, you cannot label them to a collective section. I have met many people with tattoos, piercings, blue hairs and what not. Some of them are druggies, dealers, ‘pimps’ or whatever you wish to call them. I can also say that some were kinder, more understanding and harder working than the norm people that I have encountered.
When looking at people, who are we to say that we can peel behind their skins and see the truth within their hearts? If we want to play God, them we better be ready for a great fall. We are all entitled to our own opinions, it’s fine if tattoos and piercings appall you, is it really necessary for you to lecture the rest of the world on how its wrong? Because well, -it’s not-. So what if the guy next to you is covered in tattoos, at least he’s an honest soul. We can not peak into the greatness of his heart. Hence, we cannot put him down as a ‘sideways’ member of a ‘sideways’ collective.
I don’t think that tattoos and piercings are something that should hinder anyone of progress within a society. It is a personal choice, just like hair colour, choice of spouse, wardrobe, etc. It may not be stylish, chic, or flattering but that doesn’t matter. If we want to say that we are humanitarian people, if we want to show that we are open to people of all different age/sex/ethnicity. How can we sit here and taunt today’s generation on something so small as a tattoo?
It’s a shame really, we can traffic drugs, neglect the poor, discriminate, lie, cheat, steal and do all sorts of heinous deeds off camera. However, when the world is watching, we call ourselves open, loving, and humanitarian.
Baby steps everyone… baby steps.
You can start by apologizing to the woman you fired because of her tattoo and to the man you taunted with racial slurs because of his piercing.
I’m out!

I Completely agree with you maria about the piercing and tattoo’s some people just over do themselves on stuff like this and then think ” Oh Wow I look amazing with all my new tattoo’s and piercings” but in reality you look like a freak who is trying way to hard to get attention. ya a couple piercings is okay like your nose or your eyebrow or your belly Button but your belly is not visible unless you wear really short t-shirts but i think people get my point no point in going all out cause eventually you’ll regret it and you wont be able to go back because tattoo’s are on you for life so don’t make the mistake of going all out You’ll Regret it!
Hi Amie,
Thanks for your comment.
I am glad this is engaging a conversation.
What does it matter if someone is covered in tattoos, short tee’s and piercings?
Does it actually play a role in decreasing their potential as human beings?
Hey! This is awsome stuff. I agree with you that just because someone has a tattoo/pearcing, does not mean that you don’t have potential or you are a freak. I loved that your line: “People have souls, they are not books, you cannot label them to a collective section.” I thought that was a really interesting way of bringing your point across. Really well written, and good work!

Well, said you make some great points. Don’t have any piercings or tattoos due to fear of needles. In my younger days I did strange things to my hair. As a teacher and youth minister I have had many teens try to get a reaction from my by threatening or even getting piercings or tattoos. One piece of advice I give is remember that tattoos are permanent unlike hair. Think about it first.
Melanie – Thank you! I’m glad my point was understood.
TheDeeZone – Thank you! I think it’s natural to go through a phase, where we feel we need to -stand out- of the crowd, and -make a point-. I agree, the point you make about tattoo’s being permanent is very valid.
